Sometimes disks are interrupted while writing or 'burning' information onto the disk. Software corruption can occur if the writing process is interrupted by a system crash or program failure. This will create truncated files and may cause errors when the disk is being read. Investigations sometimes reveal a corrupted or missing TOC (Table of Contents) or directory information. Occasionally it is necessary for the CD / DVD to have a new surface applied to the disk. Often this can take several days but may be the only way data can be recovered.
