1) Power
off
This is the most important step. If you are in the middle of something,
save your files etc then power off and unplug the computer from the
mains.
|
2) Discharge
Static electricity
Touch a grounded metal object such as a metal filing cabinet or central
heating pipes to discharge any static electricity. A Static discharge
can damage or destroy sensitive electronic components in your computer.
|
3) Find the hard disk
cover
Turn the laptop over to locate the the hard disk. Although laptop
designs vary, usually there are two covers on the bottom of the laptop.
One cover is for the battery the other the hard disk disk. When you
look closely at the the covers there is probably a little logo or
symbol indicating what is under the panel.
|

|
4) Remove the screws
There are usually 2 or 4 screws holding the panel in place.
|

|
5) Unplug the hard drive.
There are usually instructions under the panel telling you how to
remove the hard disk. In most cases the hard disk simply slides to
one side. On some laptop there may be additional mounting screws or
a lock that may need to be removed.
|
|
6) Handle the drive
carefully
It is very easy to cause further damage to a hard drive through mis-handling.
Handle the drive with care and wrap it up properly if it is to be
sent by post.
