Raid systems are systems that link and use a number of hard disk together. There are many variations in use and they are simply numbered Raid 0, Raid 1, Raid 2, etc, etc. The actual storage of data on the hard disks can be very complicated depending on which type of Raid system is in use.

A problem with one hard disk in the Raid Array ('set of disks') or Raid system is likely to affect all the disks in the Raid system. In some Raid systems the data is spread evenly across the disks in a process called 'striping'. Depending on the type of Raid system the spread of data could be just a bit of data of data on each disk, or a byte or block of data on each disk. The various Raid systems have different Error prevention systems built in. Recovery from a Raid systems can be difficult and should only be done by a Data Recovery specialist.
